- Tappara outshot Rögle but end game one goal down
- Rögle scored all three goals within thirty minutes of play
- Both teams scored after defensive errors
Rögle Ängelholm beat Tappara Tampere for the second time in a row to take a one-goal lead into the Return Game of their Quarter-Finals series. The Swedes scored three in the first half of regulation before a third-period comeback by the reigning Liiga champions nearly lost them the game.
The 2022 CHL Champions wasted no time in getting into the game - just over two minutes in, Oskar Pettersson was able to get the puck over the line from within the crease. Home team Rögle had the momentum for the opening minutes, but at 6:01, Linus Sjödin was called for holding which offered Tappara their first powerplay of the game. Not only did they fail to utilise it, but some poor play from their defencemen and superb pressing from Linus Sandin saw the Rögle player rush toward Christian Heljanko completely undefended. A few quick back-and-forths and a backhand shot doubled his side's lead just under eight minutes into the game.
With Tappara two goals down, they started to make mistakes. The remainder of the first period offered Rögle three powerplay opportunities, but none saw any change in the scoreline.
The second period saw the penalty minutes dwindle away as both teams focused on their game. The puck flew up and down with both goaltenders being properly tested. The midway point of the game did, however, see a penalty on both sides and offered some 4-on-4 play which gave Rögle's Oskar Stål Lyrenäs the space he needed to break free of the Tappara defensive line and let lose a strong shot at their net. The puck flew with such speed that it caught Heljanko completely off guard and sailed into the net to make it 3-0 to the home team.
Tappara were unable to open their scoring in the middle frame, but their time came in the final period. At 48:22, Niko Ojamäki picked up a stray puck in Rögle's end of the ice and was able to fire it past Calle Clang to make it 3-1. The Finns scored their second of the game some four minutes later, this time Valtteri Kemiläinen was the one to see his name light up on the scoreboard. Tappara had a powerplay following a Rögle foul, but they just couldn't break down the Swedish team's defence. As the powerplay timer struck 0:00, Kemiläinen launched a rocket all the way from the blue line and it somehow found its way through all the traffic into the net to reduce the deficit down to just one goal.
Tappara pushed for the equaliser, but a resilient Rögle would deny them the pleasure as the final buzzer would ultimately sound to the tune of 3-2 to the home side who take a one-goal lead into next week's Quarter-Finals Return Game.
