An eventful seven-goal game saw Eisbären Berlin beat French side Grenoble for a second time this season and take all three points. The results from this game and from the Mountfield HK vs Frölunda Gothenburg game that was played from 16:00 CEST put Berlin in third place of the Group G standings, whilst Grenoble sit bottom with an 0-3 record and 0 points.
Berlin drew first blood three minutes into the game when Marcel Noebels found the back of Grenoble's net with a goal line tap in on the powerplay.
Grenoble were quick to respond, scoring their first goal of the game at 6:46. Chad Nehring then went on to fire Grenoble into the lead for four minutes at 11:26, scoring on a 5-on-3 powerplay, before Berlin's Zach Boychuk fired through Raphael Garnier on 5-on-4 play to tie the score at 2-2.
Berlin's Kevin Clark scored in the final minute of the period after Maxim Lamarche and Janne Jalasvaara were both sent off for Grenoble. He got onto the end of a Matthew White pass, redirecting the puck into the net from within the crease.
Grenoble switched goalies at the start of the second period, with Raphael Garnier making way for Jakub Štěpánek.
Zach Boychuk doubled his side's lead at 23:56 with a backhand goal at equal strength - a rare thing in this game of 11 powerplays.
The rest of the second period saw Grenoble play with a man advantage two times, but fail to score on both.
The third period was one in which Grenoble really turned up the heat. They pushed for the net, reducing all penalty minutes, in search of a goal to draw them back into the game.
At 57:14, Berlin's Morgan Ellis was called for cross-checking and Grenoble leaped at the chance to claw their way back into the tie, pulling their goalie for a an extra two skaters on the ice. But it just wasn't their game, as they failed to find the back of the Berlin net thanks to some superb goaltending from Tobias Ancicka all night long.
Boychuk completed his hattrick with an empty-netter at 59:37 before the final buzzer sounded to the tune of 5-2 to Berlin.
