- Zach Boychuk, Jérémie Blain two goals each
- Mountfield scored five goals in third period to turn game upside down
- Mountfield qualify for Playoffs, Berlin out
Czech Extraliga regular season winners Mountfield HK qualified for the 2022/23 Champions Hockey League Playoffs in spectacular fashion, beating rivals Eisbären Berlin 7-3 away. The result was the perfect reward for the Czech team's countless fans who made the trip north to support their favourite team and were vocal throughout the entire game.
The game got off to a cautious start with both teams testing each other out for most of the first period. It would end up taking over 19 minutes of game time before the first goal of the game would land as Berlin's Zach Boychuk broke the deadlock firing in a rebound puck from close range in the final seconds of period one to put the home team 1-0 up.
With play now opened up, period two offered some real fireworks. First to get off the line were the hosts who doubled their lead one and a half minutes into the second frame. But Mountfield weren't out just yet as Jan Veselý scored a beautifully placed one-timer after some jaw-dropping setup play that could be traced all the way from Mountfield's own third to cut the deficit in half.
Berlin scored at 33:26 to restore their two-goal lead but by the end of the second period the difference would be slashed back down to one - this time Mountfield team captain Radek Smoleňák coming to his side's rescue after yet another string of quick and precise passes across the ice that caught the Germans totally unprepared.
The third period was Mountfield's from start to finish. In the early minutes of the final frame, Mountfield's Smoleňák found himself alone in front of Berlin's Juho Markkanen on more than one occasion but the Finnish goaltender stood firm between the posts.
But Berlin's defensive blunders would come back to haunt them as Mountfield's relentless offensive pushes finally paid dividends when Jérémie Blain fired in a loose puck at 46:23 after some commotion in front of the Berlin net to tie the game 3-3.
After scoring the equaliser, Blain would go on to score the go-ahead goal two minutes later, before Kevin Klíma and Lukáš Cingel added goals #8 and #9 of the game.
The remainder of the game saw penalty minutes in large on both sides, but some 5-on-3 play for Mountfield saw the Czechs add another goal to their seemingly endless scoresheet for a 7-3 final result as the visiting fans went wild.
