- Despite being first to score, Grenoble suffers big loss
- High offensive Berlin leaves little chance for opponents Grenoble
- Second period set clear path for Berlin's victory
From Group G, Grenoble hosted Eisbären Berlin for their first match.
The first period was off to a quick start for both teams, with the first goal on deck coming at 7:20 by Grenoble’s Dylan Fabre assisted by Damien Fleury and Jere Rouhiainen. Two minutes later, Berlin followed with a goal by Zack Boychuk. The momentum followed as Marcel Noebels brought the 2-1 lead for Berlin.
In the final minutes of the first period, Grenoble attempted to find their opening but Berlin's defense stayed firm.
With little over a minute into the start of the second period, Berlin's Matthew White landed a goal, showcasing his recent achievement as the DEL's top scorer last season.
Quick to follow White, Frank Mauer landed a goal with the assist by Manuel Wiederer and Frank Hördler.
Zack Boychuk brought the score to 5-1 for Berlin, firing the puck right into the back of the net for his second goal of the night
After two more goals for Berlin, by Giovanni Fiore and Frank Hördler, Grenoble switched out goalie Jakub Štěpánek for Raphael Garnier, hoping to turn things around and give their home stadium something to cheer about.
Those chances wouldn't come before Matthew White striked again, adding his second goal of the game, bringing the score to 8:1 for Berlin.
Grenoble fans did, however, get their moment, when Julien Munoz scored the team's second and final goal of the match.
Giving up too many goals in the second period would settle Grenoble's fate and will surely give them something to work on as they prepare for their next match against Mountfield HC on 3 September.
It's safe to say that this has been a statement win for Berlin!
