- Fribourg's Group Stage record was ended
- Holm earns a shutout
- Both sides played a tight-checking game
Henrik Holm and the Stavanger Oilers did something no team since 2016/17 has done, handing Fribourg-Gottéron a loss in the Group Stage in a 1-goal contest. Holm made 28 saves en route to helping his club secure their first victory and gain a valuable three points.
A generous bounce off the backboards gave the visiting side the edge at 5:36 of the first with Stavanger's Ludvig Hoff lighting the lamp on the backhand moments after their powerplay had expired.
The Norwegians were able to sustain offensive zone time following their man-advantage and as a shot from the point found its way through traffic, Hoff was on the doorstep to send the eventual game-winner past Connor Hughes.
With 20 minutes in the books, shots were 10-4 in favour of Stavanger who managed to maintain their 1-goal lead.
Both goalies were tested with grade-A chances as the second stanza ensued - Holm even stacked the pads on one Fribourg opportunity - but neither side was able to solve their opposing netminder and the scoresheet remained unchanged with one period still to play.
Two minutes into the third, it appeared Stavanger had added to their lead but the referees ruled the puck had been under control and the play blown dead before it crossed the line.
Fribourg's inability to find the net wasn't for a lack of chances. The Swiss side were awarded a pair of powerplays, including the only one of the final frame, but as the clock wound down Stavanger never let up and the visitors skated away with a much deserved win before they travel back home.
