- Salzburg win tiebreaker, qualify for the Round of 16
- Sandro Schmid scored in the shootout to lift Fribourg
- Both sides were excellent on the PK
Sandro Schmid netted the game-winner in the shootout as Fribourg-Gottéron would take a 3-2 victory over Red Bull Salzburg to close out the 2022/23 Group Stage. Despite their loss, however, Salzburg still qualified for the Round of 16 by beating the tiebreaker against the Stavanger Oilers.
The Austrians opened the scoring at 6:12 of the first when Lucas Thaler added his second goal of the season. Thaler received a pass near the top of the circles, skated in and wired it glove side past Loïc Galley to give his side the early edge.
Momentum shifted in Fribourg's favour in the second with the Swiss side scoring two in quick succession.
Samuel Walser started things off, finishing a pretty passing play from Mauro Jörg while the hosts were shorthanded. Less than two minutes later, Schmid skated in on a partial breakaway, outwaited Atte Tolvanen and deposited the puck on a beautiful backhand.
In the third, both teams traded chances in the opening minutes but it would be Salzburg to cash in near the midway mark when Peter Hochkofler leveled the scoring at 2-2. The initial shot from Troy Bourke bounced off of Galley and fell in front of Hochkofler who spun and fired it home.
That was all the scoring in the final frame, and with both sides still tied after 60 minutes, the clubs entered the extra session.
The game would continue to a shootout where, after five rounds, it was Schmid who would play the hero, beating Tolvanen far side to secure the win for the Swiss.
