- Tappara net two in the first period
- Slovan couldn't find success on their powerplays
- Phenomenal number of faceoff wins by Tappara
Tappara Tampere continued their Group C winning streak, overpowering visitors Slovan Bratislava 2-0.
The Finnish hosts got a chance to test their powerplay skills early after Slovan took a minor, but couldn't find the net. Back on even strength, Slovan's netminder Samuel Hlavaj had a tough task with the Finns sending in shots at every opportunity.
Forward Tyler Kelleher had Tappara's second powerplay covered and put the Finns up 1-0. A beautiful no-look pass from linemate Kristian Tanus hit the stick of the American, who rifled off a one-timer. Less than a minute later a snipe from Jere Henriksson would make it 2-0 for the hosts.
Slovan managed just one shot on goal making it a quiet first period for Tappara netminder Christian Heljanko, but a penalty from Jori Lehterä would see the visitors kick off the second stanza with a man-advantage for a minute and a half.
The Slovaks struggled to set up and couldn't generate good opportunities. A third penalty for Slovan would see another two minutes of powerplay time sent Tappara's way, but the hosts couldn't connect. Slovan's Adam Lukošík had one of the best chances of the night, nearly jamming one past Heljanko on a powerplay, but the penalty kill from the Finns was flawless.
With Slovan desperate to break the zero on the scoreboard in the third, tensions were running high, but the Finns weren't giving an inch. Tappara pressured hard to extend their lead further, and had several close calls but were denied by Hlavaj.
With the clock ticking down, Slovan were handed a 5-on-3 lifeline for a minute and a half. Despite coming frustratingly close, their efforts went unrewarded. In a last-ditch effort, and with less than two minutes to go, Slovan pulled the goalie for a sixth attacking player but couldn't get on the board before the sound of the final buzzer.
