- Wolfsburg cut the deficit twice
- EV Zug led the entire game and outshot their opponents 36-26
- Both sides struck on the man-advantage
Yannick Zehnder scored the game-winner as EV Zug routed Grizzlys Wolfsburg 5-2 to gain ground in their Group in this young season.
Wolfsburg's penalty kill was tested just seconds into the game when Dustin Jeffrey went off for a minor, but despite several chances Zug failed to capitalise with the extra skater.
Later in the period, the Swiss would go back on the powerplay but this time with different results as Zug succeeded in netting their first. Lino Martschini wound up a shot from the top of the right circle and lasered it through a screen past Justin Pogge to give his side the lead with under five minutes to play.
The Swiss and Germans continued to trade opportunities in the second, but 13 minutes in the action picked up as the two teams registered multiple goals in rapid succession.
Zug struck first to extend their lead. Livio Stadler's wristed a floater from inside the point that found its way past Pogge. Moments later, Brian O'Neill was called for Holding, and the hosts went on their second man-advantage of the night.
This time they made good use of it. Jean-Christophe Beaudin's initial shot ricocheted around in the crease before Laurin Braun pounced on the loose puck to secure his first and cut the visitors' lead in half.
But Zug's Zehnder would reinstate their two-goal cushion when he delivered a one-timer eleven seconds later.
Wolfsburg continued to claw their way back in though as they found a way to return fire off a Luis Schinko wrist shot that whizzed past Leonardo Genoni.
Just over a minute later, Sven Leuenberger advanced his club's lead once again when a superb stretch pass from Dominik Schlumpf found the forward in alone on a breakaway to make it 4-2. Brian O'Neill padded Zug's lead at 44:48 to give the Swiss a comfortable 3-goal advantage.
A deflated German side failed to put anything together in the closing minutes of the match-up as Zug would go on to claim their first game in Germany.
