- Dario Simion: 2 goals for Zug, including OT winner
- Tyler Morley: 2 goals for Wolfsburg
- Dustin Strahlmeier: 49 saves for Wolfsburg
Dario Simion scored twice, including the overtime winner on the powerplay, as EV Zug defeated Grizzlys Wolfsburg 4-3 in overtime. Zug outshot Wolfsburg 53-18 in the game, but Dustin Strahlmeier was incredible in net, in terms of both quantity and quality of saves.
Zug dominated the first five minutes of the game and opened the scoring at 4:47 on the rush when Simion cut into the slot and beat Strahlmeier with a quick shot over the blocker.
Lucas Dumont tried to tie it just shy of the period’s halfway mark as he tried to jam in a rebound, but when that didn’t work he went around back of the net and found Laurin Braun in front for the one-timer. Then Wolfsburg took the lead in the last minute of the opening period when Tyler Morley’s wrister from the high slot beat Leonardo Genoni over the glove.
Just as they did at the start of the first period, Zug went back on the attack to start the second and tied the score back up at 24:57 when Sven Senteler forced a turnover in the Wolfsburg zone and fed a backhand pass to Fabrice Herzog, who made no mistake.
Zug kept coming in waves but Strahlmeier stood tall, particularly off Lino Martschini on a dangerous 3-on-2 rush. Later in the period, Senteler was hooked from behind on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot. On the shot, Senteler went far to the right, then cut into the middle and beat Strahlmeier over the blocker to regain the lead.
Zug looked to widen their lead on another furious start to the third period, but Strahlmeier continued to make saves. As the period went on, Wolfsburg started trying to mount an attack and Dumont had a great chance in alone but Genoni denied his backhand attempt.
Then the Grizzlys went to the powerplay and managed to tie it with 5:35 to go. With Genoni screened, Morley found the top corner with a perfect wrist shot. There was some question about the positioning of the Wolfsburg forward in front of the net, but it was determined there was no crease violation and the goal stood.
There were more chances for Zug but they didn’t score again until overtime. By then, the visiting Grizzlys had at least salvaged a point, which can be attributed largely to the effort of Strahlmeier.
