- Genève outshoot Bolzano 37-28
- Robert Mayer phenomenal with 27 saves
- Connor Ford netted Bolzano's sole goal of the game in the third period
Six goals ensured a dominant win at home for Genève-Servette on Game Day 3 of the Champions Hockey League Regular Season. The win in regular time bumps up the Swiss team's tally to six points, while HC Bolzano are yet to to make it past 0.
Genève's netminder Robert Mayer was outstanding on the night, making 27 stops, and allowing a single goal in the third period. Sami Vatanen led the time on ice with 22:41 minutes and managed two assists, while teammate Marc-Antoine Pouliot led the offensive charge with two goals.
Bolzano's penalty kill was tested quickly, just minutes into the opening period, giving hosts Genève some early chances. On equal strength play resuming, Canadian forward Pouliot opened up the scoring for Genève at 5:39 off a shot from blueliner Vatanen to make it 1-0.
A high stick from Guillaume Maillard gave the Italian side their first powerplay of the evening, but they came up empty-handed. Bolzano's Lucas Lessio might have wanted to file a police report after he dangled his way into the slot before being skillfully robbed by Mayer. Bolzano would get another bite at the apple moments later on account of Christophe Cavalleri who was called for holding, but no luck.
At 17:01 the hosts would make it 2-0. The play unfolded with Daniel Winnik carrying the puck around the net, and delivering a perfectly placed pass onto the blade of Marco Miranda who beat Swedish netminder Niklas Svedberg.
With the first period done and the second period underway, Genève had a huge opportunity to buffer their lead but couldn't find the finishing touch on their man-advantage play. Bolzano's Bradley McClure caught a break but his shot was gloved by Mayer, who was running hot.
Back on even strength play, an errant puck passing through the slot was collected and shot in, and over the stick of Svedberg by Cavalleri making it 3-0. Less than two minutes later, Teemu Hartikainen netted his first goal of the evening, wristing goal number four past Svedberg.
A duo of defensive lapses by the Italians would see Svedberg work hard to stem any further damage to the scoreboard before the conclusion of the second period.
Trailing 4-0, Bolzano had a lot of ground to cover in the third period and a powerplay sent their way was a chance to gain back ground. American forward Connor Ford came through with the goods, with a goal off the doorstep of Mayer to make it 4-1, but the Swiss side responded immediately. A pass from Hartikainen to an unmanned Vincent Praplan saw the puck rifled into the back of the net.
The 5-1 lead in favour of Genève would be extended to 6-1 thanks to Pouliot who potted his second of the night, a neat deflection off a shot from Theodor Lennström on the powerplay. With no chance of a comeback in sight the final buzzer would sound 6-1 in favour of the hosts. The victory gives Genève their second win in regular time, while Bolzano suffer their third straight loss.
