- Joachim Blichfeld scored two goals for Växjö
- Lars Bryggman opened up the scoring for Lahti
- Penalties cripple Lahti in the second and third periods
It was an early lead for visitors the Växjö Lakers who struck early thanks to a goal from Marcus Sylvegård. The Lahti Pelicans' netminder Jussi Olkinuora made the initial save off the pads, but couldn't glove the loose puck in time before it was shovelled past the line making it 1-0 for the Swedes.
A delay of game penalty by Leevi Tukiainen, followed by a too many men call handed the Lakers four minutes of man-advantage time, but Olkinuora worked hard closing the gaps. The two powerplays helped the Swedes conclude the period with 11 shots on net compared to three from the hosts.
Lahti found their rhythm in the second period, testing netminder Emil Larmi at times, but the reigning SHL champions weren't relinquishing control of the game doubling their lead at 27:50, this time from forward Joachim Blichfeld.
Forward Lars Bryggman got his side back on track with a bullet from the top of the circle to bring the Finns back within striking distance. The goal jolted the team from Lahti who nearly levelled the game, but an outstretched Larmi robbed the hosts of what looked to be a sure goal. The Pelicans were in full flight moments later with another rush but suffered a major blow with the ejection of Petteri Riihinen, and a five-minute powerplay going the visitors' way.
The ensuing advantage dissipated when Växjö took a penalty, but on resuming the powerplay, German forward Tobias Rieder wasted no time to put his team up 3-1. With the new on-ice rules kicking in, an exhausted Lahti were lucky to push through the remaining penalty kill without suffering further damage.
With the third period underway, Blitchfeld netted his second goal of the night, letting the puck rip from the high slot off a pass from Robert Rosén to extend the lead of the Swedes 4-1. Chaotic scrums erupted frequently, with Lahti fighting to redirect the game, but the Swedes were steadfast.
An empty-netter from Brian Cooper would make it 5-1 for the visitors and seal the deal, giving the Växjö Lakers their first win on the road and an important three points for the Regular Season Standings from Game Day 1.
