- Rapperswil completed the upset with 7-2 aggregate win against RS winners Mannheim
- Mannheim have now failed to advance past the Round of 16 for a fourth time
- Melvin Nyffeler was the difference-maker for the Swiss
After crawling their way into the Round of 16, Swiss underdogs Rapperswil-Jona Lakers completed the upset, defeating Adler Mannheim 7-2 on aggregate to guarantee their place in the Quarter-Finals and continue their bid for the European Trophy. With the loss, Mannheim have now failed to advance past the Round of 16 for a fourth time and second time in three years.
Just as in the First Game, it was the Swiss opening the scoring as Gian-Marco Wetter recorded his fifth of the campaign less than two minutes into the contest. Tim Grossniklaus's shot from the point ricocheted off the pads of Arno Tiefensee and onto Wetter's stick as he slid it past the netminder to give his team a 5-1 aggregate lead.
Following the first 20 minutes, scoring was at a premium for each side for a majority of the second period as neither was able to find the net with both netminders playing incredibly well for long stretches.
It wouldn't be until the 30th minute when Jordan Schroeder added to his point total with his first of the night and third of the series. The play began with some cycling down the far boards before the puck eventually found its way to the slot where Nicklas Jensen attempted a redirect that pinballed around the top of the paint allowing Schroeder to pounce on the loose puck and shovel it into the net to extend his team's lead.
If 4-1 was a hill, 6-1 was a mountain for Mannheim as the Germans found themselves desperate to get anything going in the way of scoring as play got underway in the third.
A holding penalty three minutes in would give the hosts an opportunity to put a dent in the Swiss' lead on the powerplay and they succeeded as Tyler Ennis fed the puck to Matthias Plachta who wired home a one-timer past Melvin Nyffeler to get his club on the board.
Mannheim continued to push the pace of play as they set up camp in the offensive zone and generated several quality chances. But the story of the night was Rapperswil's defence headlined by their 28-year-old netminder who made multiple key saves to maintain his side's lead as time wound down in the final stanza.
With the opposing net empty, Nico Dünner scored in the dying seconds to cap off his club's victory as the 16th-ranked team would take down the 1st-ranked team to keep their season alive.
