- Lukko's Kim Nieminen opens up scoring in the first period
- Munich outshoot Lukko 20-11
- Hattrick for Ponthus Westerholm
The game was physical and lightning-fast, but four goals were enough to secure a win for Lukko Rauma on Game Day 5 of the Champions Hockey League Regular Season. The win in regular time bumps up Lukko's tally to 12 points while Red Bull Munich now trail behind with 10 points.
Both sides were defensively strong, evidenced by the unusually low number of shots overall (20-11). Swedish forward Ponthus Westerholm was outstanding, netting a hattrick, including a powerplay goal and an empty netter.
The opening period saw Munich's Trevor Parkes almost dangle his way to a goal but a precarious slip had the puck slide just out of reach. His efforts weren't in vain as the Germans gained their first powerplay of the night. Munich converted shortly after, thanks to a rocket launched by American defenceman Jonathon Blum, but was called off due to interference.
Lukko however would strike back, with 21-year-old Kim Nieminen lighting the lamp at 12:05. His wristshot, which snuck under the pad of netminder Mathias Niederberger would give the Finnish visitors the lead 1-0 heading into the period intermission.
The heavy hits dished out by Munich didn't subside in the second period, nor did they appear to faze the blue and gold jerseys of Lukko. A hooking call on Munich's Patrick Hager gave the Finns their first powerplay of the evening, and Lukko forward Jami Krannila would have been livid after only getting a piece of a bobbling puck despite having an otherwise open net.
At 26:48, Lukko extended their lead. That play unfolded off a stretch pass from Linus Nyman to Pathrik Westerholm, who had it expressed to Ponthus Westerholm who one-timed it past the blocker side of Niederberger.
The hosts staved off a second penalty kill after Maximilian Kastner was sent to the box for tripping. With less than two minutes remaining in the period Munich's salvation would come from another blueliner, Ryan McKiernan who had the puck wristed past Lukko netminder Daniel Lebedeff to halve the deficit 2-1.
With the final period in play, Munich had a golden chance to equalise on the man-advantage play after Niclas Almari was called for interference but had no luck. A second wrap-around attempt was a near miss, followed by a third attempt. Lebedeff was put through the grinder with Munich delivering an onslaught of offense in attempts to equalise.
An ill-timed penalty by Lenni Hämäläinen would give the hosts powerplay #3 of the evening, but Lebedeff was solid containing everything that came his way.
With less than five minutes in regular time remaining, Munich's hopes of a comeback became infinitely more difficult after Hager was sent to the bin. In a perfectly controlled play, Lukko had goal three scored and shortly after an empty-netter would seal the 4-1 win for the visitors.
The victory by the Finns breaks Munich's three game winning streak, but more importantly secures Lukko Rauma's passage towards CHL Playoffs, while Munich will be under pressure to come up with points in their next game.
