- Rouen netted two goals in each period
- Rouen's Joris Bedin had a three point night
- Ilves outshot Rouen 27-23
It was an action-packed last game for the Rouen Dragons who took it to Ilves Tampere in their final Regular Season game of the Champions Hockey League. While the French side were not able to secure a ticket to the Playoffs they closed out their campaign with an impressive 6-1 win over their Finnish rivals.
The first period unfolded in favour of the hosts who secured their first goal just 41 seconds into the play. Forward Anthony Rech who is in his first season with Rouen scored through a perfectly timed, pick-pocket on Ondřej Kos on the blueline. A second goal came less than two minutes later from Latvian, Rolands Vigners who beat the blocker side of Ilves netminder Jakub Málek to make it 2-0.
The action continued in the second period as Rouen netted another goal to take a 3-0 lead. Goal number three, a deflection was scored by Czech forward Antonín Honejsek.
Success for Ilves finally arrived through Jeremy Gregoire, who lit the lamp for his side at 22:17, cutting the deficit to 3-1. A high-sticking call on Eetu Päkkilä saw two minutes of man-advantage action directed to Rouen who made the powerplay count, and Rech picked up his second goal of the evening to extend Rouen's lead 4-1.
There was momentary confusion as an unprecedented event unfolded: Sacha Guimond was penalised twice resulting in two back-to-back penalty shots, in addition to four minutes of powerplay time awarded to Ilves. Both penalty shot attempts, the first from Samuli Ratinen, and the second from Emil Järventie were denied by Matija Pintarič. Rouen then managed a successful penalty kill, thwarting all attempts by the Finns.
With less than two minutes remaining in the second period, Ilves forward Robin Alvarez managed the pick-pocket of the century, snapping a shot into the chest of Pintarič, but the French hosts would maintain their lead heading into the period intermission.
The third period proved to be challenging for Ilves who needed three goals to equalise. With Rouen in sensational form and Pintarič on fire, a win wasn't looking promising for the visitors. Rouen would net two more goals, through Emil Kristensen and Joris Bedin secure a huge 6-1 win over the Finnish visitors.
Despite the win, which will bump up Rouen's final Regular Season tally to 6 points, their CHL campaign for this season is unfortunately over. For Ilves Tampere, although the loss isn't ideal, the Finns still conclude their Regular Season with 12 points, and more importantly can look forward to continuing their CHL journey with a ticket to the Playoffs.
