- Skellefteå handed Tappara first loss
- Tappara netted all three goals on the powerplay
- Skellefteå's Linus Lindström (1G + 2A) and Pär Lindholm (3A)
It was a night of firsts as Skellefteå AIK claimed a 5-3 victory over Tappara Tampere to earn their second win of the campaign and hand the Finns their first loss of the 2023/24 campaign. For the first time in this Regular Season, Christian Heljanko gave up two or more goals and it was also the first time the Tappara PK surrendered a goal.
A four-goal first period saw the hosts go down early in surprise fashion but then answer back with a pair of powerplay tallies to tie it up.
A late-reacting Heljanko was beaten low glove side by Martins Dzierkals who turned and fired the puck into the net just 1:48 into the contest to open the scoring. Skellefteå extended their lead on the powerplay moments later when the Swedes' leading scorer Rickard Hugg secured his second goal of the Regular Season off a deflection.
Tappara, however, battled back in the latter half of the period.
Carter Camper got his club on the board during their first powerplay after he received a D-to-D pass at the point before walking in and lasering it past David Rautio. Seven minutes later, Tappara added another powerplay marker immediately off the faceoff when Otto Somppi tipped in a point shot from Otto Leskinen to even things up heading into the second period.
Early in the second, Simon Robertsson made it a 3-2 game in favour of Skellefteå when he shovelled the puck past Heljanko off a behind-the-net feed from Pär Lindholm. Then some miscommunication in front of the Tappara bench sent the Swedes in on a 3-on-1 resulting in Linus Lindström's second of the tournament.
The visitors added a fifth off a scramble in front. Heljanko made the initial save but Axel Sandin-Pellika found the puck pinballing in the crease and roofed it past the Finnish netminder to make it 5-2 close to the 40-minute mark.
With a little over three minutes to go in the third, Tappara pulled Heljanko in favour of the extra attacker as the hosts went on their eighth powerplay. Their bet would payoff as they would earn their third powerplay tally off the stick of Nicholas Halloran to close the goal gap to two.
The Finns continued to have chances in the dying minutes but were unable to generate any offence as time continued to be their enemy, and after starting the Regular Season undefeated, it would be Tappara on the losing side of things with the Swedes taking the upset and the three points to bring their total to six through four contests.
