- Frölunda's powerplay helps them to a two-goal aggregate advantage
- Brynäs' special teams were ineffective all night
- Lars Johansson made 17 saves on 17 shots
It was a close contest at the Monitor ERP Arena as Frölunda Gothenburg's superb defensive effort helped secure a two-goal edge for the Swedes following the First Game of this Champions Hockey League Semi-Final series between them and Brynäs IF. Ivar Stenberg scored the go-ahead goal for his team in the first period and Lars Johansson turned aside all 17 shots he faced.
Ivar Stenberg got things going for Frölunda when he wristed one top shelf past Erik Källgren on the powerplay. Stenberg corralled the puck just above the near circle, where he took his time, picked his spot, and fired it over the stick to make it 1-0 at 10:32.
The visitors extended their lead in the third frame with another powerplay tally. This time a shot from the far circle found its way to the skate of Max Friberg, who was parked inside the blue paint where he deposited the loose change into the cage to give his club an important two-goal cushion.
Frölunda maintained their excellent defensive play for the remainder of the game, even killing off a couple of penalties, while Johansson did his part to keep the puck out of the net as the visitors now carry a two-goal aggregate advantage into their tilt next week, while Brynäs will need to re-group to better challenge their opponents in the all-deciding Return Game.
