- First period scoreless despite many chances
- Four-goal second period shifts momentum
- Erik Thorell comes close to completing his hattrick
Frölunda Gothenburg travelled to the German capital to face Eisbären Berlin on Game Day 5 of the Champions Hockey League. The Swedes entered as favourites, but the hosts, the reigning DEL champions, showed resilience and made them work hard for the points, even if it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.
The opening twenty minutes were lively, with few stoppages and plenty of pace. Frölunda started stronger, as Erik Thorell’s early effort was ruled out after video review, and Jacob Peterson was denied from close range soon after. Eisbären gradually settled into the game, but the first period ended goalless.
The second period brought goals at last. Erik Thorell broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, slipping the puck through the goaltender’s pads. Just three minutes later, Henrik Tömmernes doubled the lead with a shot from the slot, and Jacob Peterson made it 3–0 from close range. Berlin responded before the break, with Leonhard Pföderl cutting the deficit to 3–1 to give the home fans hope.
In the final period, however, Frölunda regained control and never allowed the Germans back into the game. Erik Thorell sealed the result with his second of the night into the empty net, as the Swedes deservedly claimed all three points with a 4–1 victory and secured their place in the Round of 16.
