- Frölunda qualify for eighth Quarter-Finals appearance
- Grenoble came up just shy in their first-ever Round of 16 qualification
- Solid netminding at both ends made for a close contest
Grenoble tried their best to claw their way back from a deficit they sustained in the First Game of this Round of 16 series of the Champions Hockey League, but a hungrier Frölunda Gothenburg squad was the one to skate away with a 4-3 aggregate victory as the French bow out, while the Swedes move on to their eighth Quarter-Finals appearance.
Neither side managed to move the needle in their favour through the first 20 minutes, though Frölunda maintained their two-goal aggregate advantage heading into the second period.
The Swedes continued to put the pressure on their French challengers, but Matija Pintarič was on point, making several key saves as the game inched towards the midway mark. Tobias Normann was less busy in his crease, but still managed to sweep aside a few of Grenoble's grade A chances to keep his team's lead intact.
A Delay of Game penalty on Pintarič, however, gave Frölunda their second man-advantage of the match. Just as the powerplay expired, some swift puck movement led to Linus Högberg delivering a delicate feed to Arttu Ruotsalainen who one-timed it from the far faceoff dot to make it a 4-1 aggregate lead for the hosts.
The French returned the favour courtesy of Alexis Binner's tally when he snapped one past Normann from just above the blue paint. Sacha Treille made the initial play by gaining control of the puck behind the net and then dishing it to a trailing Binner who placed it past the blocker of the Norwegian netminder.
The visitors made things interesting when they secured their second off Alexandre Mallet's fourth goal of the season at 46:05 on the powerplay. The forward wired it towards the net as it took an unlucky bounce off of a defender's stick and into the net to cut the aggregate deficit to one goal.
With their net empty, Grenoble took a chance to try and find the equaliser, but Frölunda's tenacious D spearheaded by excellent netminding, helped to seal the club's win and with it their advancement to the next stage of the 2025/26 season.
