- Tobias Normann earns shutout, denying all 22 shots
- Bolzano went 0-for-3 on the powerplay
- Frölunda's defence was in top form from start to finish
Swedish powerhouse Frölunda Gothenburg continued their stellar Champions Hockey League reputation by shutting down their Italian opposition HC Bolzano to the tune of a 3-0 win. Tobias Normann stopped all 22 shots to register a shutout at the start of the campaign.
Frölunda's Max Lindholm opened the scoring for the Swedes at 4:19 in the first when he received a lead pass from Linus Högberg before skating in all alone and roofing it past the glove of Samuel Harvey on the backhand.
End-to-end action continued in the middle stanza with the Swedes increasing the goal deficit late in the period.
A missed opportunity in the slot for the Italian side led to Jere Innala retrieving a loose puck, stick-handling around one defender and gaining a break the other way. As he entered the offensive zone, he sauced the puck to Jacob Peterson who corralled it before sliding it under the pads of Harvey for his first of the young campaign.
Bolzano would go on the powerplay in the dying minutes of the second, but to no avail as Frölunda were able to close lanes and frustrate the Foxes' ability to generate any quality chances.
With less than two minutes to play, Bolzano relayed the extra attacker. Their strategy, however, was cut short when they accrued their fourth penalty on the night, effectively ending any chance at an answer to the Swedish side's lead. This became doubly evident when Henrik Tömmernes secured an empty-netter on the powerplay to seal the hosts' victory.
