- Both defences struggled in wide-open first period
- Bolzano turned momentum in their favour during second frame
- Maxwell Gildon netted the game-winner in overtime
Kometa Brno travelled to northern Italy to face HC Bolzano on Game Day 3 of the Champions Hockey League. The Czechs entered as favourites, but Bolzano had the boost of their home crowd at the Sparkasse Arena, setting up a tightly contested clash.
The first period delivered an entertaining stretch of hockey packed with goals. Neither coach was happy with the defensive play, as both sides left plenty of gaps. Kometa capitalised on three well-worked chances through Jakub Flek, Andrej Kollár, and Adam Zbořil. Bolzano, however, kept themselves in the fight with goals from Daniel Frank and Shane Gersich, ensuring the visitors remained under pressure.
The second period continued the goal fest, with Bolzano raising their game and turning the momentum. Kometa managed to equalise on the powerplay, but the Foxes replied in kind with a man-advantage strike of their own. As the teams headed to the locker rooms, the scoreboard read 5–4 in favour of the hosts, leaving the game wide open and firmly offence-driven.
In the third period, Kometa found exactly what they needed: an equaliser. With three minutes remaining, Tomáš Zohorna struck on the powerplay for his second of the night to force overtime. But the extra frame belonged to Bolzano, as Maxwell Gildon scored the decisive goal to give the Italian side a 6–5 OT victory and a much-needed extra point from the game.
