- KalPa remain undefeated in the Regular Season
- Klagenfurt continued to have issues on both sides of the puck
- Patrik Kerkola made 28 saves on 29 shots
KalPa Kuopio suited up against Austrian challengers KAC Klagenfurt for their final game of the Champions Hockey League Regular Season and did what they've done all campaign long - reveal their opponents' weakness early and stay the course - as they took this contest by a 3-1 final.
With two seconds remaining on the man-advantage, it was KalPa converting when Joona Saarelainen bunted home the rebound on the backhand to give his team a 1-0 lead at 5:09. Not long after, Juuso Könönen provided a two-goal cushion for his club when he deposited the loose change over the left pad of Florian Vorauer after receiving a cross-crease feed from Andreas Okany.
Both teams had their chances to change the score in the second but neither were able to break through their opponents' netminder. The Swedes monopolised the opportunities, but Vorauer made several stellar saves to keep his club's deficit at two. Despite not seeing as much action in his end, Patrik Kerkola, also played his part well, including stopping a deflection with seconds to go in the period.
What was a hill became a mountain to climb for Klagenfurt in the final stanza when another home goal was announced for KalPa courtesy of Lukáš Kaňák who slid one through the pads of the Austrian netminder for his first of the campaign. Kaňák received a pass from Cade Borchardt before walking the blue line and wristing it in to all but seal the victory for the Swedes.
With six minutes still to go in regulation, Klagenfurt opted for the extra skater and it paid off as the Austrians' dry spell ended when Thomas Hundertpfund cashed in on the powerplay to secure his second of the tournament. But that would be it, as the visitors were denied entry into the offensive zone following the tally with KalPa going on to claim their sixth-straight win.
