After a goalless first period, KAC Klagenfurt found their scoring touch to take Odense Bulldogs 6-3 on Game Day 4 of the Champions Hockey League. Mario Kempe had a stellar performance, scoring four points (2G, 2A), while Slovenian forward Jan Muršak dominated on face-offs, winning over 78% of his draws.
The opening period was marked by steady physical play and close calls. Forward Markus Oden came close, ringing a shot off the crossbar of netminder Sebastian Dahm midway through the frame. Both teams traded chances throughout.
Despite starting the second period a man down, Odense successfully killed their penalty, however, just moments later, Swedish forward Kempe picked up a rebound, putting the puck past netminder Frederik Søgaard to put Klagenfurt ahead 1-0. Goal number two was an unfortunate deflection by Odense defenceman Mikkel Lehmann Hansen and a fortunate credit to blueliner Maximilian Preiml.
Sebastian Fakt cut the lead in half with a slapshot goal at close range, bringing the home side back within striking range. Kempe responded, potting his second of the night to extend the lead to 3-1. Quality offensive chances were limited for the Danes with Klagenfurt controlling most of the play, and continuing to outshoot their rivals 21-14 by the conclusion of the second period.
The game took a turn for the worse in the third period when Klagenfurt's top scorer was pasted into the boards. Scuffles ensued, culminating in the ejection of Clemens Unterweger plus minor infractions. The momentum shift saw Odense's Kevin Karlsson claw back a goal, reducing the deficit to 2-3. The visitors responded through Luca Gomboc, who's netfront goal put the Austrians up 4-2.
Odense gambled, pulling their goalie, to which Nicholas Petterson collected an empty-netter (5-2). With less than two minutes remaining, Mason Klee closed the gap to 5-3. Odense pulled their goalie a second time, only to be punished with empty net goal number two of the night at 59:59.
The 6-3 victory earns Klagenfurt critical points, and their first win on the road, meanwhile, Odense are looking down the barrel of their third-straight loss.
