It was an intense battle under the Alps as Red Bull Salzburg hosted Eisbären Berlin in the final game of the Champions Hockey League Regular Season. Both teams had plenty to play for, with valuable points on the line to keep their CHL campaigns alive.
The opening period ended after a tightly contested twenty minutes of hockey. Salzburg headed to the locker room the happier side after a fortunate powerplay goal. Connor Corcoran fired a powerful shot from the blue line that Jonas Stettmer got a piece of, but the puck slipped through his equipment and over the goal line. Berlin also created several dangerous opportunities but couldn’t find a way past the Salzburg netminder.
The second period brought Salzburg a step closer to victory as they pulled ahead by three goals. Four goals were scored in total during the frame. Salzburg extended their lead to 2-0, only for Berlin to cut it back to one at 21:50. However, the hosts quickly regained control, finding the net twice in quick succession at 30:10 and 31:36, courtesy of Mario Huber and Peter Schneider.
In the third period, Salzburg’s mission was clear. Stay solid defensively and close out the game. They executed their plan with discipline, seeing out a confident win that secured them 11th place in the overall standings and a spot in the Round of 16.
