The Belfast Giants endured a tough night in Switzerland as they faced SC Bern on Game Day 5 of the Champions Hockey League. The hosts controlled the game from start to finish and confidently secured a place in the Round of 16, scoring seven unanswered goals.
Bern’s dominance was evident from the opening shift. Less than a minute in, Miro Aaltonen’s shot from the slot hit the post, bounced along the goal line, and was accidentally knocked into the net by a Belfast defenceman to make it 1-0. Emil Bemström doubled the lead at 7:19, and Alain Graf extended it to three when he converted on the powerplay at 13:59.
The second period followed a similar script. At 28:46, Marco Müller circled behind the net and fired the puck into the top corner to make it 4-0. Moments later, Benjamin Baumgartner added another, giving Bern a commanding five-goal cushion heading into the final frame.
Bemström struck again in the third period, tapping home a rebound off the end boards to make it 6-0. Nils Rhyn added one more to round off the scoring as Bern cruised to a dominant 7-0 victory. When the final buzzer sounded, the Swiss side celebrated not only a statement win but also a well-earned spot in the Round of 16.
