- Ambrì-Piotta claim vital win in Group G
- Matt D'Agostini and Mario Hofer scored goals in home debut
- Dominík Hrachovina made 27 saves in win
Despite two early PP chances for the away side, Ambrì-Piotta had the better of the shots in the opening period, and their chance came with five minutes to go in it. Färjestad’s Victor Ejdsell was given a 5+game penalty for checking from Behind, but the home side struggled to get any momentum on the extended man advantage, and both teams went into the first intermission tied at 0-0.
In the second period, Ambrì-Piotta continued to build pressure and finally their efforts were rewarded. Fabio Hofer managed to get his stick to a rebound off a Michael Fora point shot to give the hosts their first goal on home ice. Tempers flared in the second period of a feisty game which saw a number of after-whistle incidents. Out of all the penalties, Ambrì were awarded another extended powerplay chance, but Farjestad nullified all of the Swiss side’s scoring chances, and the score remained 1-0.
The third period was a cagey affair, with both teams feeling that the next goal would be absolutely vital. To the delight of the packed Valascia crowd, the home team ended up getting the crucial second goal. A neutral zone turnover allowed Matt D’Agostini to break in down the right wing and hammer a slapshot past Markus Svensson, for D’Agostini’s first CHL goal since 2014/15.
