There was a Playoff-like atmosphere at the Curt-Frenzel-Stadion, as Augsburger Panther hosted Bílí Tygři Liberec in what was a must-win game for the Czech side to keep their push for the Round of 16 alive.
Augsburg dominated the puck for large parts of the opening frame, forcing Marek Schwarz to make a number of fine stops. Olivier Roy was flawless in the Augsburg net through the first period. With less than two minutes to go, Der Panther took the lead. A textbook face-off win by Patrick McNeill was worked to the point, leading to Adam Payerl to hammer a one-timer past a helpless Schwarz.
The White Tigers found their stride in the second period, in what was a feisty game They started to build up the pressure on Olivier Roy, and eventually found the net with just 21 seconds to play in the middle frame. A fantastic second effort by Tomáš Filippi saw the Liberec forward steal the puck off the defenceman and find Radan Lenc alone in front of goal, and the latter made no mistake finding the back of the net.
For the second time in the game, turnovers proved to be costly for Augsburg. They failed to clear the zone three minutes in, allowing Marek Zachar to centre the puck and eventually Adam Musil fired home on a second chance opportunity to give Liberec the lead. The game looked to be getting away from the home side, until Thomas Holzmann saved the day with just three and a half minutes to go in the third period. Augsburger Panther worked the puck behind the goal line, finding Holzmann who ghosted into the high slot and one-timed the puck past Schwarz to tie the game, and eventually send it into overtime.
In the extra frame, Augsburger Panther generated the first real chance, but Marek Schwarz made a spectacular glove save to deny the home side in the first minute of OT. The home side went close again with Payerl looking for his second, but Schwarz once again shut the door. The game went to a shootout after a frantic extra five minutes. Through three shooters, Rostislav Marosz had the only goal, giving Liberec the edge. After Marek Schwarz made his fourth stop, Michal Bulíř went top corner on Roy to seal the two points for the White Tigers in a thrilling game.
