- Simon Sezemsky scores the shootout winner for a big win for Augsburger Panther
- Late goal by Matt Fraser forces overtime in opening game of Group C
- Goals from Petter Emanuelsson and Karl Fabricus for Luleå
It was a dream debut for German side Augsburger Panther, as they marked their first ever appearance in the Champions Hockey League with a win on the road over former champions Luleå Hockey.
The teams traded goals in the opening period, Jaroslav Hafenrichter scored the game’s opening goal for Augsburger, but then Petter Emanuelsson putting the hosts Luleå level later in the period to send things into the first intermission with the scores level at one. With just one goal in the second coming off a great solo effort by Karl Fabricus, Luleå held a narrow lead heading into the final period of regulation.
With neither team finding a way past the opponents’ goalie, time was running out for the visitors, but then with a powerplay opportunity, Matt Fraser tied things up at two goals each which was enough secure at least a point for both sides with the game heading into overtime, where despite their best efforts, neither team could find that crucial goal to secure victory, meaning a shootout was required. Both sides scored on their first attempts, but the goalies stood firm after the first round, denying shot after shot until eventually Simon Sezemsky scored in the fifth round to secure a historic win in their CHL debut for the Augsburger Panther.
