- Tyler Beskorowany: 35 saves for Banská Bystrica
- Kevin Reich: 25 saves for Munich
- Marek Bartánus: shootout-winning goal for Banská Bystrica
Veteran Marek Bartánus scored the shootout-winning goal in the fifth round to bring HC05 Banská Bystrica their first win of this year's Champions Hockey League and hand Red Bull Munich their first defeat.
After scoring only once in their first two games, one of Banská Bystrica’s objectives for this game was to generate offence and they certainly did that, especially off the start, scoring twice in the first period. In fact, it took just 38 seconds for Marek Slovák to open the scoring, taking a drop pass from Joona Jääskeläinen and firing a wrister that went through Kevin Reich – the first goal Munich had allowed in the competition.
Munich quickly answered with a pair to take the lead themselves, with Frank Mauer firing a shot through Tyler Beskorowany and Philip Gogulla pouncing on a loose puck in the Banská Bystrica zone and skating right in on goal. But the lead lasted just over a minute as Michal Kabáč took advantage of some confusion and beat a screened Reich to the far side.
After that wild start of four goals in the first 8:06, the game calmed down somewhat, and nothing more came in regulation time.
In the first minute of the third period, Munich thought they’d retaken the lead in the third period but the goal was called back due to goaltender interference. A few minutes later, on another Munich power play, Jordan Hickmott was tripped on a shorthanded breakaway, which drew a penalty shot. On the ensuing shot, he tried to beat Reich five-hole but was denied. With 2:18 to go in regulation time, Beskorowany stopped Chris Bourque on a breakaway.
Overtime settled nothing, setting the stage for the shootout, which the home team won 2-1 to take the extra point.
