- Matthew Fraser scored the winning goal just 30 seconds into OT
- The Giants enjoyed 7 powerplays and were able to equalize to 1-1 from one of them
- Panther win in both games on the road in their CHL debut
Over 5000 fans gathered in the SSE Arena to witness a very intense and even battle between the Belfast Giants and Augsburger Panther. Both teams were out there to win from the get-go, but it was the away team that got the first goal thanks to Matthew Frasers nicely placed shot. After Alex Lambacher’s tripping penalty and Andrew LeBlanc’s stick holding penalty, Belfast’s Jordan Smotherman equalised from a powerplay with only a few minutes of the first period remaining.
The second period saw both teams exchange blows, but it was Belfast’s Patryk Wronka who proved most effective in scoring. His goal 12 minutes into the second period gave the Giants the lead for the first time in the match. Augsburg’s chances of equalising were hindered by constant penalties – they had 5 more penalties then Belfast throughout the whole match.
Augsburg’s equaliser came 3 minutes the third period through Marco Sternheimer’s precise strike. Both teams played very offensively trying to end the game, but despite having to kill two powerplays, it was Augsburg who had the advantage in shots on goal (11 to Belfast’s 7). With just one minute of playing time to go Bobby Farnham was able to deflect the puck mid-air into the net, but after a lengthy video review his stick was deemed as being too high and the goal was disallowed. With just seconds of playing time remaining, no team was able to prevent OT with a goal.
Just 30 seconds into overtime, Augsburg’s Matthew Fraser was able to overcome Shane Owen and score from a lovely set up combination. Just as in the game against Luleå, Augsburger Panther win in overtime and bring home a combined 4 points from their first two CHL matches ever.
