- Scoreless first and second periods
- Genève scored two empty-net goals, Bremerhaven netted two powerplay goals
- Flawless performance from Maximilian Franzreb who stopped 16 attempts
After two scoreless periods, the goals flowed in the third period with Pinguins Bremerhaven throwing everything they had against reigning CHL Champions Genève-Servette. Despite outshooting their rivals 39-18, Bremerhaven conceded two empty-net goals ending their chances of a Semi-Finals appearance with a 6-2 loss on aggregate. Netminder Antti Raanta was stellar for his side making 37 saves on the night.
Bremerhaven knew the magnitude of the task ahead and wasted no time peppering Antti Raanta early, who looked to be in fine form. With the backing of a roaring home crowd, the Germans had sustained pressure in all three zones, and as a result of those efforts Genève managed just two shots on goal before half the period had already whittled by.
The Swiss visitors picked up the first powerplay of the game after Bremerhaven forward Miha Verlič was called for slashing and Bremerhaven averted disaster after netminder Maximilian Franzreb lost sight of the puck which tumbled into his crease. A sprawling effort from the home team had the puck cleared to safety.
Less than three minutes into the second stanza, the Germans got their first man-advantage time, and a chance to cut the lead thanks to Simon Le Coultre. An incredible no-look backhand shot from between the legs of Christian Wejse clipped the post of Raanta's net sliding dangerously close to the goal line. A surge of energy during the remaining minutes of the period saw more pucks drilled towards Raanta, but nothing would find the back of the net before the whistle of the final intermission.
Bremerhaven came flying out of the gates in the third period, but Raanta was flawless in shutting down first and secondary efforts including a ridiculous stick save in the opening minutes. Going for broke, the Germans pulled their goalie for a sixth field player but things went awry when Alessio Bertaggia netted goal number one on an undefended net.
A series of penalties ensued, and salvation for the home side finally came through the slapshot of Phillip Bruggisser at 42:57. Less than 17 seconds later, an unassisted Jan Urbas would score powerplay goal number two to make it 2-1. Bremerhaven pulled the goalie a second time, hunting for goal number three, but Sakari Manninen shut the door on any chances of a comeback netting his first goal of the night, and the second empty-net goal for the Swiss.
The score now tied at 2-2 (6-2 on aggregate) was an impossible task for Bremerhaven to come back from. Genève pulled Raanta at 58:46 hoping to secure the game-winning goal, but the final buzzer would sound and conclude 2-2.
The 6-2 win on aggregate represents a tough loss for Bremerhaven who played three solid periods, were flawless on the PK, and outshot their opponents by a factor of more than two. For Genève, the all-important Semi-Finals berth is secured, and they more one step closer towards back-to-back Championships.
