- Rotter hits two for Caps
- JP Lamoureux saves 96.55% of shots
- Potential 3-way tie for top spot after tonight
The Vienna Capitals got themselves well back into the race for qualification with a famous win over Frölunda in Gothenburg.
Using early powerplays to their advantage, the Capitals took the lead inside ten minutes - Rafael Rotter with the final touch to slap the puck home at 9:50. Vienna netminder JP Lamoureux was the reason the sides went in at the break level however, producing a stunning glove save with the clock running down at the end of the first period.
The middle period also belonged to the Capitals, although the home side squandered several chances - Joel Lundqvist firing wide from point blank range after Kelsey Tessier had put Vienna two ahead with only 23:46 played. Just over the halfway point Vienna's lead hit 3-0, Top Scorer Peter Schneider on the breakaway didn't find the net, but Chris DeSousa followed up on the rebound to finish off the move. A scuffle between the two top scorers late in the period saw both top scorers, Schneider and Indians' Chay Genoway, ejected for fighting.
Frölunda came out strong in the third, Joel Mustonen guilty of a couple of missed chances early on. The Capitals ran into penalty trouble as the clock ticked down and eventually saw their resistance broken - Max Friberg got on a fortunate back-board rebound from Jonathan Sigalet's shot to make it 1-3 with 2:53 to go.
But Vienna were not going to be denied their win, and after a neutral zone turnover Rafael Rotter doubled his tally for the game with a backhanded goal into the empty net. The win lifts Vienna well back into the race for qualification, where we could theoretically have a three-way tie at the top of Group A tonight after Zurich's game in Aalborg.
