- Two goals from Cole Sanford for Cardiff
- Ken Jäger scores the lone goal for Lausanne
- Cardiff face two games on the road next week as Lausanne return for their home games
It was a much better performance by the Cardiff Devils as they hosted Lausanne HC at Ice Arena Wales. The Welsh side entered the game on the back of a 5-0 defeat to Adler Mannheim on Thursday, but it would be a tough test against Lausanne who were riding high after an overtime victory against Lukko Rauma.
An early powerplay would be exactly what Cardiff needed, after being shutout in their opener they had a chance to open thier account in the 2021/22 Champions Hockey League season, and they made the most of their chance.
Brodie Reid faked out everyone with a no look pass across to Cole Sanford, and he buried his first goal for his new team and Cardiff took the lead which they would keep until the end of the opening frame.
Early in the second Cardiff found themselves two goals ahead, as Luca Boltshauser and defenceman Aurélein Marti were tangled up in the crease, Brodie Reid put the puck on net to extend the hosts advantage.
The two-goal cushion was short lived however as the Devils didn't spot Ken Jäger walk into the slot and he calmly fired his shot past Mac Carruth to make it a 2-1 game, and that's how it remained until the end of the action in the second, setting up a tight finish with just one goal separating the two sides.
Whoever started quickest in the third would be crucial in deciding the outcome, and Cardiff wasted no time at all. Trevor Cox found Cole Sanford again, who quickly directed the puck goalwards, to give Cardiff a 3-1 lead and a two goal cushion less than a minute into the third.
Sam Duggan was on hand to tuck in a rebound after a lovely move by Mark Richardson to set up the initial shot, and the Devils would then hold on to take a 4-1 victory.
