- Olle Alsing: 2 goals for Djurgården
- Niklas Svedberg: 16-save shutout
- John Murray: 27 saves for Tychy
Djurgården Stockholm were chasing top spot in Group F while GKS Tychy knew that their CHL ride would be coming to an end after the group stage, but nonetheless, the Polish champions put forth a valiant effort in the Swedish capital, staying even with one of Europe's most historic clubs for most of the game.
The game remained scoreless for almost two full periods despite chances from both sides. In the first minute, the puck came to Djurgården’s Mattias Guter with an empty net to shoot at, but the puck wouldn’t lie flat for him. Then a couple of minutes later, Tychy’s Paul Szczechura poked the puck free from Niklas Svedberg’s pads and into the net, but the referee ruled that the Djurgården goalie had the puck frozen and disallowed the goal.
Early in the second period, Tychy again put the puck across the goal line, this time off the skate of Christian Mroczkowski, but again it was disallowed, this time for a kicking motion. Then four straight Djurgården penalties gave Tychy ample power-play time and two two-man advantages but the Polish champs still couldn’t break through. Finally, on a Djurgården power play in the dying seconds of the middle frame, a long slap shot by Olle Alsing handcuffed John Murray. Video replay was needed to confirm that the puck did indeed cross the goal line before time expired.
Early in the third period, Alsing scored his second of the game, this time just seconds after the expiration of a Tychy penalty, to make it 2-0, and the home team finally had a bit of breathing room. Minutes later, Niclas Bergfors appeared to make it 3-0 but it was disallowed for goaltender interference. But Djurgården had all the offence they needed and the only question left was whether Svedberg would keep the door shut and that would be answered in the affirmative.
