- Viktor Lodin scored the game-winner in OT for Färjestad
- Tappara's Kristian Tanus tied it late to force the extra session
- A hard-fought game on both ends of the ice
This Champions Hockey League Round of 16 match-up between Färjestad Karlstad and Tappara Tampere came down to the wire as Viktor Lodin scored the game-winner in OT to claim a 6-5 aggregate victory over the Finnish side, sending the Regular Seasons Winners onto the Quarter-Finals.
Tappara's powerplay made its debut four minutes into the contest to great success as Daniel Brickley secured his first of the season at 5:02 to give the Finns the lead and tie the aggregate score at 3-3. Nicholas Halloran faked the initial shot from the far circle before sliding it to Brickley at the top of the triangle as the defenceman wired a one-timer that beat Maxime Lagacé over the glove.
The Swedes answered a few minutes later when they forced a turnover in the neutral zone that led to an odd-man rush. Michael Lindqvist slid a backhand pass to Henrik Björklund who lifted it past Juha Metsola to claim his club's first of the night and reestablish the aggregate lead.
Lodin extended Färjestad's lead with less than four minutes to go in the period. After gaining possession of the puck behind the Tappara net, Lucas Forsell dished it to Lodin who was out in front as the forward snapped it in to make it 5-3 on aggregate.
Second-period play began with Tappara threatening the Swedes' lead as they tested Lagacé with several quality chances in the opening stages of the middle frame, but the Canadian netminder denied the Finns' efforts, including two partial breakaways.
Opportunities continued to be had at each end of the ice in the second, but both netminders were up to the task as the teams headed into the third with Färjestad still leading by a pair.
Early in the third period, some undisciplined play from the Swedish side led to a 5-on-3 powerplay for the Finns giving the visitors a chance to close the goal gap, and that's what they did when Halloran lit the lamp on a one-timer from above the right circle.
With their CHL season on the line, Tappara pulled their netminder in favour of the extra attacker and with less than two minutes to go in regulation it was their leading scorer Kristian Tanus making his mark as he secured the equaliser with a wrister from just above the far circle, stunning the Färjestad faithful.
Then in OT, Halloran took a costly penalty that put the Swedes on the poweprlay. Just as the man-advantage expired, it was Lodin sending a snapshot past Metsola to seal the victory for the hosts in dramatic fashion.
