- Straubing's Michael Clark opened up the scoring in the first period
- Fribourg's two goals were scored with seconds on the clock during the first and second periods
- Sandro Schmid netted the game-winner in OT for Fribourg
Fribourg-Gottéron may have already qualified for the Round of 16, but they had their foot firmly on the pedal as they ramped up Game Day 6 action at BCF Arena on Game Day 6 of the Champions Hockey League. Two goals weren't enough against the Straubing Tigers who not only outshot them 37-17, but forced the Swiss hosts to OT. Sandro Schmid was the man of the moment, netting the game-winner for the hosts just over three minutes into extra time.
Visiting side Straubing outshot Fribourg 17-4 in the opening period, securing an early lead 8:03 minutes into the match. The goal scored on even strength was credited to forward Michael Clarke, off an initial shot from blueliner Stephan Daschner. The puck was shovelled out of the net by Fribourg, but not before it had just bobbled across the goal line making it 1-0 for the visitors.
Christoph Bertschy had a great chance after he blasted past Straubing's defence, but ran out of room on Zane McIntyre. Seconds later he'd take a boarding call, giving the Germans their first powerplay of the night, but 22-year-old netminder Loïc Galley was flawless stopping all four attempts.
With less than two seconds in the period, Fribourg levelled the score 1-1. It was clockwork from the Swiss hosts who strung together a succession of passes ending with Christopher DiDomenico dishing the puck to Jacob De la Rose who had a wide-open net.
The second period was almost a scoreless affair despite both teams pressing. The Germans were dominating face-offs and outshooting their hosts by a factor of nearly three, meanwhile, the tally of shot blocks by Fribourg was mounting. The Swiss hosts almost clinched the lead after a set-up by Santiago Näf had the puck reach Julien Rod in the slot.
A hooking call on Cole Fonstad at 39:43 would give Fribourg their first man advantage of the game, and they capitalised almost immediately. The play unfolded with De la Rose winning possession back, Yannick Rathgeb had the puck sent in from the blue line, Killian Mottet and Christoph Bertschy both took swings before De la Rose would bury the third attempt on the doorstep of McIntyre.
Straubing had a chance to claw their way back during the third period after securing two additional powerplays Their momentum was short-lived after Danjo Leonhardt was called for roughing. A little over halfway through the period a scuffle broke out resulting in another vital chance for the Germans to gain ground. The two-minute mark would see Straubing pull their goalie for a last attempt to squeeze in the equaliser and Leonhardt would answer their call at 59:47.
Heading into OT, a rejuvenated Straubing took the lead, but would be undone in a stunning fashion by Sandro Schmid who collected a loose puck off the boards, skated his way into the slot, before deking the defenceman, pulling the puck to his forehand, and blasting it top shelf past McIntyre to seal the game 3-2 in favour of Fribourg.
