- Klagenfurt save Playoffs hopes with OT win
- Fraser & Petersen: 2 points each for Klagenfurt
- Teemu Hartikainen: 7 shots on goal for Genève
KAC Klagenfurt entered the game with three points and in need of a win to keep their Champions Hockey League Playoff hopes alive. Things didn’t look good after falling behind 2-0, but they fought back to win 3-2 in overtime over Genève-Servette.
The game started at a quick pace with chances back and forth in the opening minutes. Genève got the game’s first powerplay but were unable to convert. They also got the game’s second powerplay in the last minute of the opening period.
Less than a minute into the second period, Genève did cash in on the powerplay. Theodor Lennström made a cross-ice pass to Sami Vatanen, and the former NHL defenceman’s one-timer found the far side of the net.
In the 29th minute, Genève went 2-0 up. An innocent-looking long-range wrist shot by Simon Le Coultre was tipped in front by Alessio Bertaggia and beat Sebastian Dahm, who didn’t move.
Klagenfurt got one back late in the middle frame when Matthew Fraser was able to chip the puck to Daniel Obersteiner, who skated in alone and beat Nassim Jaafri-Hayani low to the stick side.
Just over five minutes into the third period, Klagenfurt tied it when Mathias From found Simeon Schwinger wide-open in front of the net. With one shooting motion, Swinger fired it inside the far post before Jaafri-Hayani could slide across.
Late in regulation time, in desperate need of points, Klagenfurt pushed hard for the regulation victory but were unable to score.
But while Klagenfurt were unable to secure three points, they did get two. In overtime, they broke in 2-on-1 and David Maier passed across to Fraser, who scored on the one-timer.
The win keeps Klagenfurt alive but they still have their work cut out for them. And with just a single point from this game, Genève will also enter their last game on the outside of the Playoff picture looking in.
