The race for playoff spots is heating up in the Champions Hockey League, and after Tappara Tampere's victory last night, it became almost a must-win game as KAC Klagenfurt hosted EHC Biel-Bienne, who both entered Game Day 5 on nine points each, with Klagenfurt top of Group A after four games.

Coming out for the first period, EHC Biel-Bienne did their best to quieten the home crowd, going up by two less than five minutes into the game. Firstly Peter Schneider put the visitors ahead with a shorthanded goal on a breakaway effort that needed a bit of help crossing the line from a backchecking defenseman, and then Janis Moser doubled the lead a few moments later with his first ever CHL goal. Klagenfurt couldn't find their response in the first period as Elien Paupe stopped all 11 shots he faced. 

It didn't take long in the second period for Klagenfurt to finally get on the board, some great puck movement by Nicholas Petersen set up Lukas Haudum to one time the puck past Paupe to make it a 2-1 game. But the two-goal lead was re-opened moments later after another breakaway by Schneider and he tucked it away under the bar after a nice move out in front. Midway through the period, Schneider completed the hat trick, as David Fischer of Klagenfurt lost an edge behind the net, gifting the puck to Schneider who made no mistake on grabbing his third. The hosts would score another before the end of the period, as Andrew Kozek scored his third of the tournament to make it 4-2 with 20 minutes of regulation remaining.

Things got interesting early in the third, David Fischer made up for his mistake in the second period that led to a goal by firing a rocket from the point to make it a 4-3 game on the powerplay with 17 minutes remaining, but a powerplay goal from Toni Rajala of Biel re-opened the two goal lead shortly after. The fantastic performance by Peter Schneider continued midway through the third period, as he buried a fourth goal of the evening to give Biel a huge 6-4 win that puts them at the top of Group A heading into the last Group Stage games next week.
