- Donbass open up scoring in the first period, Makarov exits early with an injury
- Klagenfurt equalise in the second
- Netminder Janis Voris stellar between the pipes for Donbass
With hosts KAC Klagenfurt already through to the Round of 16, and HC Donbass Donetsk out, the stakes weren't do or die. Netminder, Sebastian Dahm was a notable absence from Klagenfurt's line-up, along with top-scorer Nicholas Petersen, Rok Tičar, Matthew Fraser, and Thomas Hundertpfund.
Still, Klagenfurt managed to draw first blood, after Marcel Witting's stray stick, somehow entered the facemask of Andrey Makarov, who exited the ice with a nasty cut. With a four minute powerplay in hand, Donbass got down to business. A tight turn off the boards by Vitalii Lialka, saw a low shot squeeze past netminder Jakob Holzer, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Klagenfurt defenceman Niklas Würschl had a great chance to even up the score, but his wrist shot sailed high into the glove of Makarov's substitution, 21-year old Latvian netminder Janis Voris who kept the Austrian's to a scoreless first period.
Klagenfurt got on the board at 27:27 into the second period, after a shot from the point by Würschl connected with netfront traffic, and dribbled over the line. Slovenian forward Rok Kapel was credited for the tip in, and earned his first goal of the season. Lialka nearly got his second of the night after cutting into the slot, and pulling the puck to his forehand, but his attempt was swallowed up by Holzer.
With it one apiece, Donbass had an opportunity to take the lead after forward Lukas Haudum was sent to the bin for tripping, but they couldn't beat Holzer. Klagenfurt had their own chance moments later after Hlib Krivoshapkin took a minor for interference, but the visitors staved off the offensive advances of their Austrian rivals.
The Ukrainian side got the man-advantage once more, after Marcel Witting was called for hooking. It was one and a half minutes of peppering the net, until Donbass netted their second powerplay goal of the night. A beautiful lateral pass from forward Andrei Biriukov, was one timed into the back of the net by Olegs Sislannikovs, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.
With less than three minutes left in the period, the Austrian's turned up the heat in attempts to equalize, but Donbass were sending all loose pucks into open space. A timeout was called with 1:01 remaining on the clock, but Klagenfurt were unable to claw their way back.
The win, despite not helping Donbass in their quest for qualifying, is long overdue. Game Day 6 closes Donbass' CHL campaign for this season, while Klagenfurt look forward to its next challenge in the Round of 16.
