- SC Bern strike late to take the 3 points
- Spirited performance from Cardiff see’s the come up short again
- Late winning goal from Ramon Untersander
SC Bern and the Cardiff Devils renewed their rivalry in Group G of the Champions Hockey League just a week after the two sides went to overtime in what ended up a 3–2 win for Bern, who were the visitors that night in Ice Arena Wales.
This time the sides clashed at the PostFinance Arena, with Bern looking to make it three wins in a row after last weeks overtime win against Cardiff, and their close home win against Växjö on Thursday night. Cardiff on the other hand only have the one point to show for their efforts and came into Saturday’s game still searching for their first win.
Midway through the opening period, the Devils gave their large number of traveling fans a reason to cheer, after a great forecheck by Mike Hedden turned the puck over, Matt Myers got his first goal of the tournament - slotting his shot past Leonardo Genoni for the opening goal.
Bern came out the stronger of the two teams in the second period, and finally managed to find their way past Ben Bowns as a great cross ice pass from Jan Mursak found Simon Moser who fired a great one-timer into the back of the net. Cardiff however took the lead again just six minutes later, as Joey Martin’s backhand effort went upstairs on Genoni to give them a lead with just 20 minutes to go.
Despite looking strong for the first two period, SC Bern came out for the final period and looked hungry, taking a stranglehold on the game and when Gregory Sciaroni tied it up again, they never looked like they were going to drop points. Ramon Untersander secured all three points with less than five minutes to play, putting his side in a great position as they continue to fight for a qualification spot, but leaving the Devils a huge mountain to climb if they’re to get out of the group stage, despite some fantastic performances where they’ve come up just short.
