- Munich lose first home game of the season
- Karri Rämö makes 33 saves to shutout Munich
- Djurgården scored two empty-net goals in the final period
Last year’s finalists Red Bull Munich just couldn’t quite gather the strength needed to turn around their 5-1 loss against Djurgården Stockholm from the first leg and after a 3-0 loss at home, they exit the competition in the Quarter-Finals. Meanwhile, Djurgården rewrite the history books yet again – after making the Quarter-Finals for the first time ever, they now qualify for the Semi-Finals where they will face Czech side Mountfield HK.
As expected from this anticipated Quarter-Finals match, Munich were out to score from the get-go. They made their physical presence on the ice known and fought ferociously for each and every puck. But their offensive and physical style of play was sometimes deemed to have crossed the line and they had to hold off two Djurgården powerplays, one of which was briefly a five on three. Sadly, because of all the penalties, their momentum from the opening minutes of the game dwindled away and they had trouble getting into chances in front of the opposition net and with 20 minutes up they left the ice with the score still tied 0-0.
Munich upped the pressure even more once they returned for the second period and played dangerously in front of the Djurgården net, but playing high up the ice had a big downside – they were left vulnerable on the counterattack, which Djurgården took advantage of numerous times with their quick forward passing. Two and a half minutes in, Djurgården’s Tom Nilsson broke the deadlock after quickly being passed the puck from a faceoff win in the opposition third. His powerful shot from the blue line sailed into Daniel Fießinger’s net extending Djurgården’s aggregate advantage to five goals. Despite Munich having multiple chances in the remainder of the second period and Djurgården goaltender Karri Rämö having to pull off some important saves, they couldn’t quite tie the game and left for the locker rooms 0-1 down.
With five goals to score, Munich needed some drastic changes to their game plan and coach Don Jackson decided to call the goalie to the bench in the opening minutes of the third period. But it didn't quite do the trick, as just a few minutes later Djurgården’s Kalle Östman took aim of the empty Munich net on the opposite end of the ice and all anyone could do was watch the puck effortlessly glide across the rink and hit the back of the net ending Munich’s hopes of recovery. With nothing to lose they played out the rest of the match with goalie Daniel Fießinger on the bench and tried to utilise their extra skater advantage, but as the clock relentlessly ticked away their Semi-Finals dream was just out of reach and Djurgården ended the series with another empty net goal – this time from HenrikEriksson, to end the game 3-0 (8-1 on aggregate) and qualify for the Semi-Finals.
