- Munich become the first ever German team to make the Quarter-Finals
- Zug outshot the visitors 36-24 but couldn't find a way through
- Danny aus den Birken earned his shutout saving 36 shots
After delivering the goods away from home, EV Zug really struggled to establish themselves in this game, giving Red Bull Munich an opportunity which they seized. Credit must go to the visitors, who worked flawlessly to make life hard for the Swiss side in front of their home fans. They scored the opener with a powerplay goal at 21:07 when Justin Shugg threw a harmless looking shot, which fortunately made it past the screened Tobias Stephen in net.
Munich caught Zug on the backfoot to execute what proved to be the finishing blow when a precise pass from Mark Voakes was placed home by Frank Mauer before a defenceman could intervene. Forced into making their netminder vacate his net, the home side can only wonder how the game would have unfolded had forward Garret Roe not missed an empty-net opportunity down the other end of the ice after the puck fell gloriously to him.
