- Michael Szmatula scores twice for SønderjyskE
- Five Munich players with two-point nights, including two-goals for Ben Street
- Munich face Rögle at home next while SønderjyskE travel to Zug
Group D action of the 2021/22 Champions Hockey League continued with a Gameday 3 meeting between Red Bull Munich and SønderjyskE Vojens of Denmark.
After a tough game on Gameday 2, it was a much better start for SønderjyskE but in strange fashion.
An early powerplay gave them the chance to take the lead, and as Michael Szmatula threw the puck in the zone seemingly looking for a line change, Daniel Fießinger was slow to react, and the puck clipped the post before setting in the back of the net to give the Danish side the lead.
Munich couldn’t find any quick response, instead waited until late in the opening twenty minutes. Ben Street finished at the back door after a nice pass by Frederik Tiffels to tie the game on the powerplay.
The goal gave Munich confidence and before the period was out they found the go-ahead goal they were looking for as Maximillian Kastner was quickest to jump on a lose puck, and with the rebound coming off his trailing leg, it took a video review to award the goal as Munich carried a 2-1 lead into the second period.
It didn’t take long in the second period for Munich to get back on the scoresheet. Street grabbed his second after some lovely play between himself and Trevor Parkes, with Parkes quickly returning a pass to Street who blasted a one-timer past Patrick Galbraith to give Munich a 3-1 lead.
Three quickly became four, through Parkes, and then it became five as Yasin Ehliz joined the goalscorers to take a 5-1 lead into the third period.
Less than five minutes into the third period, Munich added a sixth as Jonathon Blum tapped the puck into the net after a scramble in front, with Munich comfortably cruising towards a big victory.
With the game looking settled, that didn't stop the physicality, Sebastian Cimmerman saw himself ejected from the game in the final 10 minutes, which then allowed SønderjyskE a chance on an extended powerplay.
It didn't take them long to capitalise on the advantage, Szmatula grabbed his second to make it a 6-2 game but that was all they could find on the five minute powerplay, and as time ticked away, Munich held that scoreline right to the end to pick up a big victory.
