- Krystian Dziubiński: 1G, 1A 15:51 TOI
- Nikolaus Kraus netted the game-winner for Salzburg
- Salzburg outshot Oświęcim 37-21
Nikolaus Kraus lifted Red Bull Salzburg over Unia Oświęcim in Overtime 3-2 to earn their second victory in as many games while the Polish side suffered their second OT loss of the campaign.
The puck dropped in the first period and just 18 seconds later the Polish were celebrating when Hampus Olsson scored his second of the tournament off a redirect in front. A high shot from top scorer Krystian Dziubiński near the left boards made its way towards net where Olsson had his stick ready to tip it in.
Salzburg would answer with a brilliant goal off the rush from Dennis Eamon Robertson at 15:22. The defenceman went coast-to-coast dekeing around several defenders before making a nifty move to get inside and then scooping the backhand past Linus Lundin to level the match 1-1.
With 20 minutes gone, it was Salzburg controlling the pace of play for long stretches of the period while Oświęcim were in familiar territory, being outshot 16-7.
The Austrians broke the deadlock in the second period thanks to a skilled second effort from Andrew Rowe on the edge of the crease. While falling to his knees, Rowe worked the puck underneath Lundin's pads to the open man, Luca Auer, who deposited it into the open cage to give the visitors their first lead.
But the second period would end as the first did, with the two teams knotted once again.
With only 16 seconds left in the middle frame, Oświęcim found the equaliser when Dziubiński was able to get in behind the defence, get to the middle of the ice, and launch a no-look shot that beat Atte Tolvanen to the short side.
Then in the third, a penalty shot was awarded to Dziubiński with a chance to take the lead late in the frame, but the puck went wide and so the clubs stayed tied with a little over three minutes to play.
With neither side able to solve the opposing netminder, the score remained 2-2 as the two teams headed to OT.
In the extra session, it was Kraus cashing in after some smart passing down low found the forward wide open with a gapping net when Lundin attempted a desperation save as the Polish side suffered another disappointing Overtime loss despite their best efforts to the contrary.
