- Färjestad scored all five in the second period
- Lack of discipline, inability to sustain puck possession among Lahti's mistakes
- Maxime Lagacé earns shutout, stopped 13 of 13
Färjestad Karlstad scored five goals in the second period and Maxime Lagacé earned a shutout stopping all 13 shots as the Swedes would go on to claim victory over the Lahti Pelicans by a 5-0 final to open up their 2024/25 Champions Hockey League bid.
Besides a holding call on Färjestad's August Tornberg, the first period between the Finns and the Swedes was tame. Neither side gave the other much time or space as both clubs played a conservative game and after 20 minutes, it was the visitors with a minor advantage in shots at 7-3.
That narrative would change quickly, however, when 33 seconds into the middle stanza, Färjestad drew first blood when Lucas Forsell put the first of five second-period tallies past Jasper Patrikainen to give his club a 1-0 edge.
An excellent forechecking effort by Marian Studenič resulted in the forward gaining control of the puck behind the cage before sliding it to Forsell who willed it past the Finnish netminder on a second effort chance. Färjestad then extended their lead when another strong effort down low led to the puck popping out to the top of the blue paint where Per Åslund was to shovel it into the net on the backhand.
Then the ice opened up a bit thanks to a pair of infractions handed to Jonas Enlund at the 29:36 mark. The resulting powerplay saw Färjestad with a chance to extend their lead and Magnus Nygren and Michael Lindqvist made good on that opportunity, cushioning the visitors' lead even further.
A beautiful passing play between the circles led to Viktor Lodin floating one to Nygren who fired home the one-timer. Then, Lindqvist blasted his own one-timer through traffic to make it 4-0. The Swedes would continue their onslaught as Marcus Westfält deflected a fifth tally past Patrikainen at 34:35 as the Swedes continued to set up shop in the Finns offensive zone for long stretches.
The start of the third period was a rehashing of the first two with Lahti unable to sustain much puck possession, preventing them from generating any chance of putting a dent in the Swedes' lead.
Still trailing by five with less than two minutes to go, the Finns' attack continued to be frustrated by Färjestad as Lahti were only able to muster two shots on goal from the start of the period. As time expired, it was the visitors' busy second period that would carry them to their first win of the 2024/25 campaign over a Lahti team that was outplayed from start to finish.
