- Adam Tambellini scores game-winning penalty shot six seconds before the final buzzer
- 17-year old youngster Marco Kasper scores two for hosts
- Rögle two out of two in debut CHL season
A tough pill for Red Bull Munich to swallow, as Rögle Ängelholm pull off the biggest comeback of the season so far, coming from 3-2 down to win the game in the final 20 seconds!
There was no time to waste in Sweden – once the puck hit the ice it was game time. Munich’s Canadian sniper Ben Street broke the deadlock with a nicely aimed shot on a four-on-three powerplay three minutes in, putting the away side into the lead.
It didn’t take long for Rögle to retaliate, at 4:34, Ludvig Larsson scored the equalizer firing past Danny aus den Birken from close range.
The Munich goaltender made his biggest save of the period during a Rögle powerplay 17 minutes in – the Swedes came at him three-on-one but, the German giant stood firm and stopped the shot and the rebound.
A minute later he was called into action again, but this time he stood no chance against a powerful shot that was clipped in by Austrian youngster Marco Kasper.
Munich equalized midway through the second period, scoring two goals in a minute. The first was a Frederik Tiffels shot from close range after a great pass from Trevor Parkes, who picked up an assist.
The second was a lovely tap in from unmarked Munich captain Patrick Hager who didn't give Rögle goaltender Calle Clang a chance.
Seconds before the buzzer, towering defenceman Konrad Abeltshauser got called for hooking as he tried to stop a Rögle counterattack. The refs awarded a penalty shot and Tyler Kelleher stood up to take it, but the skilled American was unable to outmanoeuvre Danny aus den Birken who pulled off another massive save.
Munich kept up the pressure in the final period, spending most of the first minutes in front of the Rögle net, but the Swedes also found their chances to test out Abeltshauser and co. as they desperately tried for the equalizer.
Zachary Redmond’s hooking penalty at 51:00 offered the home team two minutes of extra space on the ice but they were still unable to break down the Munich defensive line.
Rögle goaltender Calle Clang left his net two minutes before the final buzzer, but the situation looked hopeless as Munich dug even deeper. With just 20 seconds to go, Larsson fired a rocket aimed at the Munich net and thanks to a clip in by, yet again, Marco Kasper, it went in, tying the game 3-3!
As if the late equalizer wasn’t enough, six seconds before regulation, Ben Street got a hooking penalty, and a penalty shot was awarded to Rögle. Adam Tambellini lined up for the shot that could win them the game and positioned it perfectly, getting it past the goaltender and into the back of the net as Rögle celebrated their astonishing comeback.
