- Rouen led at three different points
- Donbass penalties made a difference
- David Gilbert scores the game-winner for Rouen
A change in scenery inspired a change in play as a re-focused Rouen Dragons club clawed their way back into Group G with a home win over HC Donbass Donetsk.
Andrey Makarov and Matija Pintarič picked up where they left off stopping chance after chance to open the affair, and after a period that saw both netminders stand on their heads, it would be an opportune chance in front from Donbass's fourth line that would put the visitors up one with 15 seconds left.
Andrei Biriukov was in the right place at the right time to earn his third marker and give Olegs Sislannikovs his third assist and Andrei Sigarev his second.
Coming into the second stanza, Rouen had a single mission in mind: solve Makarov.
After fighting off a careless batch of penalties that saw Donbass go on an extended man-advantage, an Anthony Guttig one-timer would be the solution the home side was searching for.
From there, the PIMs column kept growing as the penalties kept coming. Donbass went on the man-advantage after Jordan Reynaud was called for interference; Andrei Sigarev would add his name to the penalty sheet at 31:30.
Where the visitors failed, however, the home side succeeded and on their fourth powerplay, they found their second solution to the Russian netminder.
Following a failed clearing attempt, Sacha Guimond found Andrew Johnston who fluttered one from the top of the circle to give Rouen their first lead of the night.
But Donbass's fourth line wasn't done.
A little over three minutes after the French cushioned their lead, Sigarev found himself on the scoresheet once again as he secured the Ukrainian side's second tally with a quick shot off the face-off that flew past Pintarič.
Heading into the third with the score tied at 2 apiece, the floodgates seemed to be parting for both sides and the first team to take advantage was Rouen.
Following up the play after a shot from the left-wing side, Reynaud came through with an easy deposit to give the home side a 3-2 lead with three gone in the third.
In an unexpected turn, though, the home fans had hardly stopped celebrating before the tying goal would find its way past the Slovenian netminder courtesy of a shot through traffic from Vitalii Lialka who earned his second of the tournament just 20 seconds later.
What seemed like a Donbass comeback, was decidedly extinguished, however, when David Gilbert found time, space, and the net to give Rouen their third lead of the night at 53:35.
A late powerplay was awarded to Donboss, but Pintarič and company never let up and the score stood as Rouen took their first win on home ice.
