- Two late goals in the second carry Rouen to victory
- Both teams have goals waived off in the second period
- Teams were tied at one with less than two minutes remaining in the second
With all four teams in Group F still able to progress to the next round of this years Champions Hockey League, the final two games of group stage play were set to be tense affairs, and the first meeting between the Rouen Dragons and Rungsted Seier Capital lived up to the billing.
Rouen hosted the first meeting, and were the first to get off the mark. Rungsted ran into early penalty trouble, falling down two men and after killing the five-on-three portion of the penalty kill, they couldn't keep Rouen out much longer, as just nine seconds after returning to four skaters, same great passing set up Joris Bedin in front to give the hosts the lead, with the only goal of the first period.
Early in the second, Rungsted found their scoring touch. What looked like an innocent dump into the zone turned fruitful for the visitors, as the puck found it's way to Nikolaj Rosenthal, who found Henrik Hetta all alone on the opposite wing, feeding the puck across, he pulled a nice move on the goalie to tie the score at one apiece.
Rouen thought they'd regained the lead with a powerplay strike, but after a lengthy review it was deemed to have been kicked in by Joel Caron, so the score remained tied. Later in the period Rungsted themselves thought they had a powerplay strike to take the lead, but this time the review didn't take long to determine it was a high stick by Marcus Olsson.
Eventually one goal would count, Dylan Yeo fired in Rouen's second of the night, with Caron stood in front as the screen, and a third would follow quickly as Bedin finished off a quick rush up ice as Rouen took a 3-1 lead into the third.
Rungsted ran into penalty trouble early in the third, finding themselves down two men and Rouen capitalised. Kelsey Tessier fired in the fourth from just inside the circle, and things could've gone from bad to worse when Jacob Gammelgaard was dismissed for an illegal hit, but Rungsted gave themselves a chance by killing off all five minutes of the major penalty.
As the time ticked away, the comeback was looking more and more unlikely for Rungsted, and as a fifth for Rouen came through David Gilbert, it pretty much wrapped things up for the hosts to take all three points in a 5-1 victory, that saw them jump into second place in Group G with one game remaining in the group stage.
