- Hampus Gustafsson scored the game-winning goal
- Rungsted and Donbass now have five points each this season
- Both teams are still in Playoff contention
Rungsted Seier Capital take two valuable points as they beat HC Donbass Donetsk for the second time this season. Hampus Gustafsson scored the game-winning goal 30 seconds into overtime as the Danes keep their Playoff hopes alive.
There was no time to waste in Denmark – as soon as the puck hit the ice in the centre circle, it was game time. Both teams were eager to get the upper hand in this evenly-matched game, but it was the home team who drew first blood just a minute into the game when unmarked Frederik Bjerrum fired the puck into the Donbass net from close range. After 20 minutes of game time, it was clear this was going to be another close game as both teams were neck and neck in almost all key areas.
A two-goal second period saw Rungsted double their lead on the powerplay thanks to André Pison, but quickly have it knocked back down to just a single goal as Pavel Medvedev had a shot bounce off him into the home team’s net. The Danes pushed for more goals, crowding the away team net and taking every possible shot, but the Ukrainians dug deep and pounced on the breaks to stay in the game.
The third period picked up the action right where the second left off – just one minute after play resumed, Tim Daly found a stray puck in the crease and launched an absolute rocket of a shot into Andrey Makarov’s net to make it 3-1. But Rungsted’s rejoicing was premature, as the away team cut the deficit in half at 44:09 and found the back of the net again for the equaliser a few minutes later. With the score locked at 3-3 after Regulation, the game headed to OT.
It only took Rungsted’s Swedish sniper Hampus Gustafsson 30 seconds to find the back of the net and secure the extra point for the home team who are now tied on points with Donbass in the Group G standings (five points each).
