- Advantage to Luleå after win in first leg
- Luleå score three times in four minutes in the second period
- David Rautio stops all 18 shots he faced.
SC Bern played hosts to Swedish side Luleå Hockey as the Round of 16 got underway, with the two sides looking for a strong start to put themselves in pole position to make it through to the Quarter-Finals.
Neither side could find the back of the net after the opening 20 minutes, with both teams registering six shots on net each, but nothing too troubling for the goalies. SC Bern really should have taken the lead to start the second period, a shot from Andrew Ebbett sprawled favourably to Tristan Scherwey but he couldn't direct his backhand effort low enough, as it hit the cross bar and went out of play.
Shortly after, Luleå eventually broke the deadlock, a shot from the point by Nils Lundkvist through traffic went past the glove of Niklas Schlegel to make it 1-0 to the visitors. It didn't take them long to add a second, a shot from far out was initially stopped by Schlegel, but Robin Kovacs was on the doorstep to pick up the rebound to tuck it past for the second goal, and then just moments it was another rebound that was set up the third goal for Luleå through Isac Brännström which forced a goaltending change, and gave the former CHL champions a 3-0 lead which they held right until the end of the middle period of play.
With no further goals coming in the final 20 minutes, Luleå held on for a 3-0 victory ahead of the return leg in Sweden next week, while Bern have a bit of a mountain to climb if they're to advance to the Quarter-Finals this year.
