With 10 places in the playoffs still up for grabs as the puck dropped on Game Day 6, and it was a must win game as Group E as Kärpät Oulu hosted group leaders Skellefteå AIK.

With just a point seperating the sides heading into the final game, the first goal could prove to be crucial. It was the hosts who broke the deadlock just over halfway through the opening period with a lovely no look pass by Jesse Puljujärvi set up Michal Krištof in the top scorer jersey to open the scoring on the powerplay.

The hosts doubled their advantage minutes later as they went back to the powerplay, and after a lengthy review the goal stood making it 2-0 thanks to Jakub Krejčík with six minutes to go in the first. Skellefteå responded late in the period as Linus Lindström deflected a shot from Jacob Andersson past Justus Annunen who was without his stick to make it a 2-1 game after 20 minutes of play.

Midway through the second period, Skellefteå tied things up at two a piece as a shot from Jonathan Pudas rang off the post and settled in the back of the net. Also immediately after, Kärpät regained the advantage as Jesse Puljujärvi fired in a shot past Gustaf Lindvall to make it 3-2. As time ticked down in the second, Pudas was at it again with a powerplay marker to make it 3-3 with a great shot from the blueline, setting up an exciting final 20 minutes.

Neither side could find the back of the net through the opening 10 minutes of the final period of regulation but just five second after the midway mark was reached, the hosts took the lead once again. Young defenceman Topi Niemelä's shot through traffic found the back of the net to make it 4-3 to  Kärpät and his first ever CHL goal. Skellefteå were down but not out as Linus Lindström forced the puck over the line to force overtime, and with nothing deciding the score in the extra five minutes we went all the way to a shootout.

It was tied at two each after five shots, and then Michal Krištof came up huge for Kärpät in round eight to secure the extra point for the hosts, leaving Group E wide open still with the result between Grenoble and SC Bern deciding who advances.
